I've added in blue just a few of the many bits about the McCanns' private investigations missed out by this Wikipedia article about the McCanns' private investigations:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At least five firms of private investigators have been engaged to make enquiries.

More than that.

At the end of May 2007 the McCanns hired Control Risks Group.[157]

It seems Control Risks Group were present in the very first week after Madeleine was reported missing - brought in by controversial but powerful PR & media group Bell Pottinger.

It was announced on 29 September that tycoon Brian Kennedy was paying for private investigators to search in Morocco.[74]

In fact he has been running the private investigation from a house in Knutsford, hands-on, for over four and a half years. With no result whatsoever.

Spanish agency Método 3 were engaged with the enquiries led by Francisco Marco.[158]

And most of the fieldwork was headed up by Antonio Gimenez Raso, who has been in a Barcelona jail since February 2009 on a charge of corruption whilst a chief inspector in the Catalonian Police Force and stealing £25 million worth of cocaine. Francisco Marco himself lied in December 2007 about his men 'knowing where Madeleine is', 'closing in on the kidnappers', and claiming that Madeleine would be 'home by Christmas'.

It was disclosed in January 2008 that Hogan International, headed by Noel Hogan, former Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent, was carrying out a cold case review, in conjunction with Método 3.[159]

Sounds great! But what did it achieve?

US-based investigation firm Oakley International was hired for six months in 2008 but it was decided in August not to renew their contract. Brian Kennedy, who underwrites the Fund, thought that their fees of around £500,000 were not value for money.[160]

But had already paid them in advance anyway. The McCann Team claimed that Oakley International were 'the big boys of international investigation', but in fact it was a one-man band company - Kevin Halligen - founded after Madeleine was reported missing. During Oakley's appointment, no calls to the McCanns' 'investigation hot-line' were followed up, according to the Director of Virginia-based compamny, iJet.

iOakley International owner Kevin Halligen, in November 2009, was being sought by the FBI on an indictment for fraud.[161] Allegations included the suggestion that he failed to pay over to investigators £300,000 that he had received from the McCann fund.[162]

Wikipedia has omitted to mention that Halligen was arrested in Novemebr 2009 and has been in Belmarsh prison ever since.

Another, unnamed, US organisation was engaged in August 2008, also on a £500,000 six-month contract, to lead the investigation.

I think you've got that completely wrong, Wikipedia. The 'unnamed US organisation' is, er, Oakley International, i.e., er, Kevin Halligen.

Método 3 were to continue to follow up information from Spain and Portugal.[163]

They carried on working for the McCann Team until well into 2009, despite the McCanns saying - after the 'Maddie will be home by Christmas' fiasco - that they were considering terminating their services.

Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragão Correia paid for the Barragem do Arade reservoir, 35 miles (56 km) east of Praia da Luz, to be searched by divers in early February 2008.

Actually, he later said that Metodo 3 has paid his expenses. He met Antonio Gimenez Raso at the Arada Dam on 10 December 2007, probably to plan this search.

He claimed to have received intelligence from underworld sources that Madeleine had been killed and dumped in a lake.[90]

He admitted this was a total lie - and then made up another gruesome story that his interest in the Madeleine McCann case began when, following a meeting at a Madeira Spritualist Church, he had a vision of a very big man strangling a young blonde girl.

The initial search was unsuccessful but it resumed in the middle of March, funded by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Engenharia e Construção.[164][165]

No it wasn't. They simply made a contribution to its cost. Marcos Correia said that Metodo 3 paid his expenses.

Several items were found in the reservoir. Initially discovered were several lengths of cord, some plastic tape and a single white, cotton sock.[166] Then two plastic bags, one containing small bones, were found on 14 March,[167] but the bones were confirmed to be those of a small animal and Correia gave up the search for lack of funds.[168]

Wikipedia is a bit out of date. They do not mention the appointment of Dave Edgar in November 2008, nor the subsequent appointment of the man from Halkyn Mountain, Arthur Cowley. Nor do they mention their string of publicity successes, which include:

1. appearing on the Channel 4/Mentorn Media 'mockumentary';
2. claiming that Jane Tanner might have seen a woman, not a man;
3. believing a likely tale of a drunken British banker who had been wandering around downtown Barcelona claiming to have met a woman looking for aher new daughter;
4. being 'convinced' that Madeleine was being held in a prison lair in the 'lawless hills' near Praia da Luz; jetting to Aachen to interview Raymond Hewlett;
5. claiming that Hewlett's estranged son Wayne burning a death-bed letter from his father carried by a 'mystery man' from Germany and which had been burnt was 'a strong lead'; and
6. promoting a fantastical claim by basketball-playing bouncer and amateur sleuth Marcelinho Italiano that Madeleiene had been abducted by paedophiles to the U.S.

The cost of these many private investigations has run into millions and has yielded up the following information about who took Madeleine and where she is: _____________.

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Amelie McCann (aged 2): "Maddie's jammies!".
